Abstract

In Brazil, expanded polystyrene packaging is often improperly discarded in most cities. This issue is related to the low density of the material, which makes its recycling economically unfeasible, leading to low utilization by cooperatives and waste pickers. Given this scenario, it is essential to assess the generation of this waste and develop techniques that add value to the material, encouraging its reuse and proper disposal. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the environmental perception regarding the disposal of expanded polystyrene among those responsible for waste management in furniture and home appliance companies in the city of Caçador, Santa Catarina, Brazil. To achieve this, an interview technique was applied using a semi-structured questionnaire, consisting of six questions addressing the interviewees' environmental awareness and eleven questions related to the EPS waste management process. The results indicate that although all interviewed companies show interest in improving EPS waste management, most lack adequate knowledge about proper handling practices and actions for this material. Considering this, the study highlights the need for educational strategies and public policies that promote the sustainable disposal of EPS, fostering greater corporate engagement in responsible waste management.
