Melitophilic Pasture and Multi-Species Management of Native Bees

Abstract

Urbanization and habitat fragmentation in the semi-arid region of Cariri Paraibano exert severe pressure on native pollinators of the Caatinga biome. In response to this scenario, this booklet introduces the Urban and Peri-urban Melitophilic Pasture as a pioneering green infrastructure and ecological refuge strategy. Through the planned cultivation of native botanical species (trees, shrubs, and forbs) with flowering patterns adapted to climate irregularity and drought, the project enables the multi-species management of stingless bees (meliponines). The benefits extend to the conservation of endangered species, urban thermal comfort, environmental education, and the strengthening of the regional bioeconomy through the production of medicinal honey and high-value-added by-products. Additionally, the guide provides a practical step-by-step framework for meliponary setup, hive zoning, and drought mitigation practices, consolidating a model of climate resilience and sustainability for the Brazilian semi-arid region.
