Abstract

Introduction: Guillian Barré Syndrome has been associated with cases of COVID-19. The pathophysiology of the association between the two entities is still unclear, however, the main hypothesis is based on the molecular mimicry existing between the epitopes of the virus and the gangliosides of the peripheral neurons. The manifestations of polyradiculoneuropathy have an acute onset about 5 to 10 weeks after the respiratory symptoms, presenting manifestations around the fourth week and may evolve to respiratory failure and death in 5% of those affected. Objective: To analyze the available evidence through a literature review on the associations described between COVID-19 and GBS, to recognize and intervene early, aiming to reduce morbidity and mortality caused by this pathology. Method: This is an integrative literature review, with a descriptive approach, based on evidence on the subject with support from previous studies. The guiding question of the integrative review will be: 'What is the relationship between COVID-19 and Guillain Barré Syndrome and the importance of early recognition and intervention? The research will be based on full articles that address the guiding question, regardless of location and language, published between 2020 and 2021. Results: It is expected that with this study it will be possible to understand the probable relationship between Guillian Barré Syndrome and COVID-19, as well as the importance of recognizing the two entities together, since if there is no intervention, depending on the involvement, the patient may evolve to respiratory failure and death, besides the high morbidity caused.
