Abstract

The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of cataia essential oil (Drimys brasiliensis Miers) on the mycelial growth of Alternaria porri. Information on new substances for the control of this fungus is important because they are responsible for damage in different crops such as garlic and potatoes. The essential oil was extracted from fresh leaves of cataia by hydrodistillation. For the evaluation of essential oil on the mycelial growth of the fungus A. porri, aliquots of the oil were incorporated into the culture medium using doses of 0 (control), 100, 250 and 500 ppm. A disk with PDA culture medium containing mycelium and fungal propagules, approximately 5 mm in diameter, was placed in the center of the Petri dish with the PDA culture medium which and added with different concentrations of essential oil. The plates were sealed and incubated at a temperature of 25 ºC ± 1, with a photoperiod of 12 hours, with the diameter of the colonies being measured daily. With the mycelial growth data, the Area Under the Curve Mycelial Growth (AUCMG) and the Mycelial Growth Index (MIG) were calculated. All treatments were statistically different, and the results indicated dose-dependent growth inhibition, reaching approximately 55% inhibition at 500 ppm. In addition, a reduction in the rate of fungal growth (in cm / h) was observed at a dose of 500 ppm compared to the control.
