Abstract

The overuse of synthetic herbicides is harmful to the environment and human health. Thus, it is necessary to adopt management techniques that employ alternatives that minimize these damages. Therefore, studies in search of bioherbicides from plant species is a reality in the scientific environment. In this sense, this work was carried out with the objective of evaluating through factor planning 2^3 which or which factors should be considered to obtain better experimental results of germinative inhibitory activity of Jatropha gossypiifolia. Thus we evaluated the alletopathic potential of the essential oils of seeds and leaves of this species, obtained in two solvents (ethyl acetate and hexane) and concentrations (0.01% and 1%). We investigated the extracting solvent, part of plant and concentration of plant essential oils. The results of the factorial design showed that all major effects were significant and that all interactions between the effects were not significant (applying the 95% confidence t-test) within the investigated experimental range. In addition, the solvent extraction factor was predominantly influential, showing that the use of ethyl acetate has a germination percentage on average 15.8% higher than hexane. Thus, J. gossypiifolia oils obtained in hexane favor the germination inhibition activity of Lactuca sativa species. The data also reveal that to obtain a greater germination inhibition effect it is necessary to consider the use of seed essential oils and that a dilution should not be performed.
