Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid gland, causing symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and emotional changes, which significantly impact patients' quality of life. Selenium, an essential micronutrient for thyroid function, has been studied as a supplemental option to improve the management of HT. This integrative review evaluates the effects of selenium supplementation on the quality of life of patients with HT, also considering its impact on antithyroid antibody levels and hormonal function. The research was conducted using the PUBMed, BVS, and CAPES Journal databases. Evidence indicates that selenium supplementation may reduce TPOAb antibody levels, contributing to decreased inflammation and clinical symptoms. Furthermore, many studies report improvements in aspects related to physical and emotional well-being, reflecting an enhanced quality of life. However, the results are heterogeneous and depend on factors such as dosage, duration of treatment, and the patient’s initial selenium status. Therefore, despite its potential benefits, further investigation is needed to establish safe and effective protocols. This work provides an updated overview of the role of selenium in improving the quality of life of patients with HT.
