Abstract

The Varroa destructor mite is considered one of the main threats to the health of Apis mellifera colonies, causing bee weakening, virus transmission, and reduced productivity. Its parasitic action affects both adult bees and brood, compromising the immune system and increasing colony mortality. Early diagnosis of the mite is essential and can be performed through visual inspection of adult bees, counting mites in pollen or wax, and molecular laboratory tests for associated viral loads. Management strategies include frame rotation, hive sanitation, breeding for resistant bees, and judicious application of acaricides. Recent research highlights the use of natural products, such as essential oils, propolis, and plant compounds, as adjuncts in mite control, minimizing adverse effects and resistance to traditional chemicals. Integrating preventive and therapeutic methods, known as integrated pest management (IPM), has proven effective in reducing infestation and maintaining colony health. It is concluded that contemporary control of Varroa destructor combines rapid diagnosis, integrated management, and the use of natural strategies, promoting sustainability and preserving the productivity of Apis mellifera colonies. Continuous preventive measures are essential to mitigate impacts effectively and sustainably.
