Abstract

Among the biotic factors that can effect sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam., Convolvulaceae) productivity we have the weevil Euscepes postfasciatus (Fair 1849). The main aim of this paper was to develop a system management of this pest based on the use of resistant genotypes. This work was carried out at LECOM (Arthropod Ecology and Behaviour Lab) in CECA/UFAL. The insect growing system started with weevils collected from infested roots. To evaluate the resistance of the sweet potato cultivars to the weevil related to attractiveness and non-preference for food, eight cultivars (Rainha da praia, Campina, Sergipana, Brasilândia branca, Canela, Copinha Rosa, Beterraba e Cenoura) were used. For this, branches and roots were offered to adults in free choice arenas, with six repetitions. Evaluations were made at 20, 60, 90 min., 3, 24 and 48 hours after release. Thirty adult insects were released into arenas. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and means compared using TUKEY's test at a 5% level of significance. It was verified that there was no statistical difference between the elected treatments in all evaluation times. Even with similar means, there were varieties that stood out with higher scores (means), such as Sergipana and Canela, therefore, being less indicated for planting and, on the other hand, the Rainha da Praia variety presented the lowest scores (means) of infestation, being therefore the most recommended for growing sweet potato.
