Abstract

Meliponini are non-stinging bees, widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions, especially in the Brazilian semiarid region. Their nests feature unique internal architectures, which vary between species and reflect evolutionary adaptations to the biome's environmental conditions. Unlike the hexagonal honeycombs of Apis mellifera, melipona nests are composed of more complex organic structures, with strong ecological and cultural influences. Nest architecture in brood discs, where the brood is usually arranged in overlapping horizontal discs (e.g., Melipona quadrifasciata, also called Mandaçaia (an indigenous word meaning "beautiful watchman"), or in spiral arrangements, allowing for thermal efficiency and ventilation. They build honey and pollen pots: stored in small oval or spherical structures constructed of cerumen (a mixture of wax and plant resins). These pots are separate from the brood area, facilitating management and protection of the colony. The bees also produce the batume and casing, which serve as protective barriers of propolis and cerumen that insulate the colony against natural enemies and environmental variations. There are also entrances and tunnels, some species constructing ornate entrances (such as Melipona scutellaris, also known as "uruçu," "uruçu-nordestina," or "uruçu-verdadeira"), while others use long, narrow tubes, reinforcing defense against predators. Furthermore, they have ecological and scientific importance, as adaptive efficiency, presenting an internal nest architecture that ensures thermoregulation, protection against enemies, and optimization of space. The biological diversity of these bees presents each species with a distinct architectural pattern, useful for taxonomic identification and biodiversity studies. And sustainability, where we have the organization of honey and pollen pots allows continuous food production and contributes to the pollination of native ecosystems. Presenting cultural values ​​especially to traditional communities that use honey and propolis of stingless bees, also valuing their nests as cultural and ecological heritage. The natural architecture of these nests inspires research in engineering, sustainable design, and the organization of complex systems. We can propose that the architecture of stingless bees is a unique expression of the evolutionary adaptation and collective intelligence of colonies. In addition to its ecological relevance, it plays a fundamental role in the culture and economy of local communities. Studying these nests contributes to the conservation of native bees and to innovation in areas such as biotechnology, design, and sustainability.

Agronomist from the Federal University of Paraíba, completed in (1981) and graduated in
Theology from Cenpacre (2007), he completed his doctorate (1991 - 1995) receiving the title
of Doctor of Agricultural Engineer from the Universidad de Córdoba - España in (1995)
which was validated by USP ESALQ - Piracicaba - SP in 1996 as the title of D. Sc.: Entomology
CAPES Concept 7. Worked in Extension at the Secretary of Agriculture of PB and
Sertanejo Project in Picuí - PB and Campina Grande - PB, taught at UEPB - State University of
Paraiba (Campus II Lagoa Seca - PB), at ESAM currently UFERSA - Federal University do
Semiárido in the Campus of Mossoró - RN) and retired as Full Professor at the Federal
University of Campina Grande - CCTA - Campus de Pombal - PB (ORDINANCE No. Grande - PB
