Abstract

Honey, propolis, and royal jelly are natural bee products widely recognized for their nutritional value and the diverse biological activities they exhibit. Each of these substances has a unique chemical composition that contributes to a broad spectrum of functional and medicinal properties. Honey, composed mainly of sugars, enzymes, amino acids, vitamins, and phenolic compounds, demonstrates antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities, being useful in wound healing, gastrointestinal health, and as a natural source of energy. Propolis, a resinous mixture collected by bees from plant exudates, is particularly rich in flavonoids, phenolic acids, and terpenoids, which account for its strong antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, and immunomodulatory effects. It has been widely investigated for applications in oral health, respiratory infections, and as an adjuvant in cancer therapy due to its cytotoxic and antiproliferative properties. Royal jelly, a secretion produced by worker bees to nourish the queen bee, is distinguished by its high protein content, especially major royal jelly proteins (MRJPs), along with fatty acids such as 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA). The therapeutic potential of these bee products is further reinforced by the synergistic effects when combined, as they share complementary bioactive compounds capable of enhancing antioxidant defense, reducing inflammation, and promoting tissue regeneration. Their applications range from traditional medicine to modern clinical and pharmaceutical contexts, including dermatology, dentistry, gastroenterology, and oncology. Furthermore, the growing interest in natural and sustainable alternatives to synthetic drugs has highlighted honey, propolis, and royal jelly as promising candidates in health prevention and as supportive therapies for chronic diseases. Despite the vast evidence of their biological activities, variability in chemical composition due to geographic origin, botanical source, and harvesting methods remains a critical factor that influences their therapeutic efficacy. The standardization of bee products, along with rigorous clinical trials, is essential to ensure quality, safety, and effectiveness in medical use. In summary, honey, propolis, and royal jelly represent multifunctional natural products with remarkable therapeutic aspects and medicinal applications. Their antioxidant, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and regenerative properties highlight their potential role in integrative medicine and as natural agents for disease prevention and treatment. Continued scientific research is fundamental to elucidate their mechanisms of action, optimize their clinical applications, and consolidate them as reliable tools in modern healthcare.
