PHYTOCANABIDIOIDS AS AN ADDITIVE TO THE TREATMENT OF ALGIC PROCESSES: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Abstract

Introduction: Many current therapeutic strategies are ineffective due to incomplete understanding of the mechanisms involved in chronic and neuropathic pain conditions, with this, studies suggest that Cannabis is being used in the treatment of these pains. Objective: To analyze, through a systematic review, whether in patients with chronic or neuropathic pain, the use of cannabis associated with conventional treatment, when compared to treatment alone, helps to minimize pain. Methodology: This is a Systematic Review of Intervention based on the use of Randomized Clinical Trials. The studies were evaluated using several research methods and searches in electronic databases: Virtual Health Library (VHL), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELo), National Library of Medicine of the United States of America (MEDLINE), Google Scholar and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro). The research included linking the following Health Science Descriptors in Portuguese: “chronic and neuropathic pain” and “cannabis” or “Cannabidiol” and “conventional treatment”. These descriptors were used in association with the Boolean logical operators “AND”. The searches resulted in 376 articles, of which 12 were used for the composition of the study. Results: It was evident that cannabis is an adjunctive treatment option, showing efficacy in the therapy of chronic and neuropathic pain. In addition, it works to improve conditions in patients with advanced cancer, which is of significant importance for the collection of evidence that allows the elaboration of some data on the dosage and formulation of cannabidiol specifically. Conclusion: Cannabis can be considered a strong adjunct in the treatment of chronic and neuropathic pain.
