Abstract

Estral synchronization is a key step in using various biotechniques and improving the reproductive efficiency of herds. The use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be effective to perform this procedure without using synthetic hormones, resulting in a herd that is close to organic production. The objective of this work was the isolation and chemical characterization of VOCs released by Morada Nova sheep acting on estrus synchronization in anestrous females. All field experiments (collection of male volatiles and bioassay with females) were carried out with animals from EMBRAPA Caprinos e Ovinos (Sobral - CE). The laboratory step was conducted at the facilities of the Laboratório de Pesquisa e Recursos Naturais (LPqRN) do Centro de Ciências Agrárias - CECA of the Federal University of Alagoas (Maceió, Alagoas). To obtain the VOCs, 30 male sheep were used: Morada Nova (10), Santa Inês (10) and Somalis (10), which were submitted to the extraction of VOCs by previously established methodology. The extracts obtained were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to the mass spectrometer and three compounds were listed for the biological assay: p-cresol, undecane and 4-ethylbenzaldehyde, in a ratio of 1: 1: 1. This study was conducted using forty-two Morada Nova female sheep, divided into two heat-inducing treatments (T1 and T2), in which T1 was submitted to olfactory VOC treatment and T2 to control group. The results were statistically analyzed by the 5% significance x-square test, which proved the effectiveness of the methodology used to isolate the volatiles and to promote estrus stimulation in Morada Nova sheep.
