Abstract

The impact of domestication and selection methods in aiming only yield gain have led to the selectiong of plants with loss of resistance traits. The reintroduction or increased expression of these traits could potentially increase resistance in plants. In order to elucidate the mechanisms of sugarcane response to herbivory and explore natural variation, different species from the Saccharum complex were evaluated for resistance to Diatraea saccharalis. Antibiosis bioassay was carried through infesting sugarcane plants with caterpillars and measuring larval performance. From the antibiosis assays we selected four genotypes with different resistance levels. Gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) were used to identify the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the metabolome respectively. The results indicate different profiles in VOCs and metabolome. We also identified the discriminant metabolites contributing for resistance. Our results may provide knowledge to be applied in genetic breeding programs of sugarcane in the development of sugarcane cultivars more resistant to pests.
