Abstract

This article aims to analyze the productions available in the scientific literature on the incidence of waterborne diseases with fecal-oral transmission. The methodology of Integrative Review was adopted, using the Virtual Health Library (VHL) and the National Institute of Health (PubMed) as a database. The descriptors “Incidence” and “Waterborne Diseases” were selected, and 16 studies published in the last 5 years were selected for analysis. It became clear that diseases are associated with water, sanitation and hygiene interruptions, lack of access to treated drinking water sources, floods and contaminated food. In an overview of the selected studies, the main diseases were: acute diarrhea, acute jaundice, typhoid fever, gastroenteritis, dysentery, viral hepatitis, hepatitis A, cholera, human listeriosis, cryptosporidiosis. The review made it clear that the incidence of waterborne diseases is still significant in developing countries, especially in rural areas and traditional communities, and is strongly associated with lack of access to drinking water, basic sanitation, and inadequate hygiene practices, showing the urgent need to develop public policies aimed at encouraging basic sanitation infrastructure.
