Abstract

Law 9.795/99, also known as the Environmental Education Law, is an important landmark in Brazilian legislation for the promotion of environmental awareness and education at all levels of education. The implementation of this law in environmental education has been fundamental to ensure the formation of conscious and responsible citizens in relation to the preservation and conservation of the environment, because it establishes that environmental education must be a continuous and permanent process, and must be present in all stages and modalities of education, from early childhood education to higher education. However, the implementation of this law in environmental education has been challenging, because the environmental theme is often seen as something secondary and not a priority in education. In this context, this study aims to analyze the implementation of Law 9.795/99 in environmental education, identifying the advances and challenges in the effectiveness of this practice in Brazil. To this end, bibliographic and documentary research will be conducted, as well as interviews with professionals in the area and with the school community. The article discusses the history of environmental education in Brazil, highlighting the progress made with the enactment of Law 9.795/99, which established the basis for the national policy on environmental education. The text also analyzes the main challenges faced in implementing the law, including lack of resources, lack of adequate teacher training, and the need for greater involvement of local communities. In addition, the importance of environmental education in promoting sustainability and citizenship is highlighted, as well as in the formation of more environmentally aware and responsible individuals. Finally, the article concludes that, despite the challenges, Law 9.795/99 has been an important instrument for the advancement of environmental education in Brazil, and that it is necessary to continue working to improve its implementation and broaden its scope in order to ensure a sustainable future for the next generations.
